4 Interesting Ways Glass Gets Recycled and Reused

As glazers, we get a lot of questions about how to install glass, which glass should be used for which project, how glass itself as well as its products (like IGUs) get made… the list goes on. But what happens to glass you no longer need? Where does it go when an IGU has gone through its lifecycle? Does broken glass remain a safety hazard for someone, somewhere until it’s buried deep inside a landfill?
Luckily, glass has one of the more interesting second (or sometimes even third or fourth) lives of any material that gets disposed of. Unlike plastic, which loses quality every time it’s reprocessed, glass can effectively be recycled forever without any loss in strength, quality, or purity (provided the recycling process is done properly).
In this article, we’ll explore the basics of the glass recycling process and as well as a few ways glass can be reused in applications you might not even realize.
A Quick Introduction to How Glass Recycling Works
At its most basic level, glass recycling comes down to three steps:
Crushing it into small pieces (this is called cullet or, if crushed into an even finer powder used in other applications, pozzolan).
Melting cullet down to molten glass (not unlike “raw” sand, limestone, and soda ash used to make fresh glass).
Reforming and reshaping it into new glass.
What’s interesting is that despite some materials being more expensive to recycle than making new materials from raw resources, glass’s recycling process uses less energy than making “fresh” glass since cullet melts at lower temperatures and can save on costs in various ways throughout the process. This is also true whether it’s residential glass or commercial glass; it just becomes a question of scale.
Unfortunately, while the recycling process itself appears straightforward enough, different kinds of glass need to be handled differently since mixing types of glass can ruin the whole load. Melting glass is one thing, but leftover silvering from mirror backings can taint the batch if not handled appropriately.
With that in mind, be sure to check your local recycling information on which glass should be picked up curbside for recycling. Not all cities and states have the infrastructure to recycle all kinds of glass so professional removal is the next best option when it comes to minimizing glass ending up in a landfill.
But aside from turning old glass jars into new glass jars, what are some other ways glass can be recycled, reprocessed, or reused?
Fiberglass and Fiberglass Products
While not all fiberglass is made with recycled glass, it’s not uncommon for it to contain a mix of glass cullet alongside fresh raw materials. Even still, recycled glass that gets turned into fiberglass gets turned into a growing number of different products. The most common use is for thermal and acoustic building insulation (the cotton-candy looking stuff in attics and squished into frames behind drywall), but it can be used in various other applications.
For instance, decommissioned wind turbine blades can be recycled into fiberglass and carbon fiber that’s then used elsewhere or to make brand new blades. Fiberglass is also used in vehicle frames and components, most commonly in boat hulls. In turn, recycled fiberglass can then be used as a stabilizing additive in concrete, cement, asphalt, and roofing tar mixtures, whether to increase thermal durability or adding another layer of insulation and weather resistance to the mixture it’s added to.
Indeed, the global fiberglass market is growing rapidly, valued at $25.07B in 2025 and projected to grow to $41.99B by 2034. What’s exciting about this is that fiberglass will help drive demand for glass recycling, in turn making recycling glass easier, more accessible, and more practical.
Glassphalt
As mentioned above, while fiberglass can be used as an additive in traditional roads and pavement, “glassphalt” is another road application for a different purpose. Glassphalt replaces 10-20% of the usual road aggregate with crushed glass, usually from mixed-color waste glass reclaimed from landfills. While it’s been useful in diverting glass from sitting in a dump somewhere, it also increases heat retention (which is useful for extending the paving season in colder climates) and has greater moisture resistance since glassphalt isn’t as absorbent as traditional paving mixtures.
However, glassphalt has some limitations: because one of glass’s properties is its smoothness, wet glass fragments in the glassphalt make the surface a bit more slick, reducing skid resistance. Therefore, glassphalt is often used in low-speed areas or when paving paths only used by foot or bicycle traffic.
With that in mind, glassphalt shouldn’t be confused with decorative glass and fiberglass shards used solely for decoration as an added top layer, whether as a literal mosaic or simply to give the paving material an extra shine, sparkle, or hue.
Countertops, Tile, and Other Decorative Applications
Similarly, recycled glass – whether as shards or reprocessed into fiberglass or pozzolan – can find new life in a ton of residential design projects. From adding flecks of blue or green glass to the paved path leading to your grilling and pool area out back to the multicolored speckles in your new fiberglass countertop, there’s a good chance that all of these things started as a broken bottle, window, or mirror.
Moreover, the broken glass itself can be used in various DIY art projects including mosaics, stained glass pieces, or even turning old wine and beer bottles into drinking glasses. Depending on your own craftiness and creativity, glass remains a favorite of arts and crafts enthusiasts because of its versatility and beauty.
Beach, Shoreline, and Wetland Restoration
Just as glass comes from sand, so too may it return (more or less). Glass cullet can be crushed down further into a fine, sand-like consistency and once processed to remove sharp edges, it finds new life mitigating coastal erosion as a key component in shoreline, wetland, and marsh restoration.
Though this application is one of the latest that is still being researched and tested before wider adoption, it has become a growing trend in beach nourishment practices. Of course, just as it can be used to replace lost sand in areas that have lost it due to sand dredging, natural erosion, or weather events such as storm surges and tsunamis, this sand-like substance can also be used in some construction applications, mitigating the need for real sand.
