Getting work done on your home can be daunting, especially if it includes hiring and coordinating some outside help. This is especially true if you’ve never had professional glass work done before. How long will this project take? Will there be a mess to worry about? Will this get in the way of my routine? How should I prepare for all this?

While these are all common questions, the anxiety they can come with is often outsized to the answers. Professional glass replacement is typically faster, cleaner, and less disruptive than most homeowners expect.

If you’re interested in getting some help for your next glass project but still don’t know what to expect, let’s walk through the entire process from start to finish.

Before the Appointment: Research, Contact, and Consultation

Before you reach out, think about what you need; not just the service itself but when and how you need it. Some instances are pretty straightforward (like fixing a broken window after the neighbor kid hit a line drive ball into your living room) whereas others might need a little planning (like planning a bathroom remodel complete with a new shower enclosure and mirror). Either way, do some window shopping and find an installer whose work you like. You can check ours out here.

If we catch your eye, reach out and say hello. You can either call us, email, or use our handy contact form. No matter which way you choose, have the following information handy:

  • The issue you’re experiencing or project you need help with.

  • The location of the project (are these exterior first floor windows, a mirror in a home gym, or something that might require a ladder?).

  • Any symptoms relating to the problem (for instance, there’s condensation fogging up the inside of your windows or you’re trying to determine the style of shower enclosure you want).

  • Any concerns you might have like scheduling (to coordinate with your household or even other contractors for bigger jobs), safety (for emergency repairs), or access to the worksite (are you in a gated community or is the project area difficult to get to?).

Once we confirm these details, we’ll send one of our installers out to perform a free estimate. We’ll schedule a time that works for you within a few days of your initial contact. During the estimate, we’ll measure and evaluate your current glass, ask you any follow-up questions, and answer any questions you might have.

If you’re looking for help with repair, we’ll always focus on replacing glass first, reserving full window replacements as a last resort to save you time, money, and hassle. Whichever you choose, we’ll match your original glass specifications or, if you prefer, discuss upgrade options like low-E coatings or different tints.

Once we have all the measurements, we’ll provide you with a detailed obligation-free estimate that breaks down the costs and timeline. Certain projects may require extra lead time (for instance, to order and build out custom glass assemblies) but we’ll be sure to coordinate an installation time that’s convenient for you.

Preparing for Installation Day

Before our scheduled visit to install your glass, there are a few things you can do to help us make sure we’re able to take care of our work quickly, effectively, and with minimal disturbance to you:

  • Clear the area around the affected windows and glass. Remove any furniture, curtains, plants, or decorations just a few feet back to give our technicians room to work safely. You don’t need to empty the entire room. We just need enough space to create a work zone around the window itself.

  • Make sure we can have clear access to the windows from the inside (and outside, if needed). Some installations require exterior access so, like before, please make sure any deck furniture or other obstacles directly below the window are moved.

  • If you have pets or small children, please plan to keep them in a separate room during the work. Even well-behaved pets can be curious about strangers and tools. While we love animals, keeping them away from the work area helps keep everyone safe.

Because we live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, weather is always a consideration for us and we monitor forecasts carefully. If conditions aren’t appropriate for the work, we’ll reschedule for a day and time that weather permits to keep your home or place of business dry.

If you have any questions about how to prepare or what to expect, please ask us during our initial estimate appointment or call or email us beforehand.

Completing the Project

Though every glass project is different, most of them have the same rhythm you can expect (and, on the off-chance it isn’t, we’ll let you know ahead of time). The actual work process looks a little like this:

  • Arrival and setup: our technicians will arrive during your scheduled window and introduce themselves. We’ll do a quick walkthrough to confirm what windows and glass are being worked on, set up the work area, and bring in our supplies and equipment.

  • Removal of old glass: while this is where the actual work begins, the exact process varies depending on window type. In most cases, it involves removing the stops and trim that hold the glass into the frame and carefully removing the failed IGU.

  • Inspection of frame: once the old glass is removed, we’ll check the frame carefully for any damage, rot, or issues that contributed to seal failure. We’ll also clean out the frame channels thoroughly, removing old sealant, dirt, and debris to ensure the new glass seats properly in the frame.

  • Installation of new glass: the new glass is installed by seating the glass on top of rubber blocks within the frame itself. Once the IGU is level, we’ll create a new weather-tight seal around the glass using setting tape or sealant. The stops and trim are reinstalled and more sealant is applied as needed once the window is set back into place.

  • Quality check: after the installation is completed, we’ll check for any gaps, misalignments, or other issues; for operable windows, we’ll test to make sure they open and close smoothly, lock properly, and operate exactly as they did before. We’ll also clean the new glass, removing any fingerprints, stickers, residue, or marks. Once our quality check is complete, we’ll invite you to perform your own to make sure you’re happy with the replacement. This is your opportunity to ask any questions about the care and maintenance of your new glass.

Post-Installation: Cleanup and Final Details

Once we’re done installing the glass, cleanup is pretty straightforward. We gather our tools, remove protective coverings, wrap up drop cloths, and clean the work area. Any glass or material debris leaves with us so aside from clean, new glass, it’s as if we were never here.

The old glass units are properly disposed of back at our shop and taken to the appropriate recycling facilities whenever possible. You don’t need to worry about getting rid of any old glass, that’s all included in our service to you.

Before we leave, we’ll give you any relevant paperwork including warranty information on your new glass. We’ll explain what’s covered and how to make a warranty claim if needed. We’ll also give you brief care instructions. While modern insulated glass units are low-maintenance, we’ll mention things like avoiding harsh chemicals or using abrasive cleaning tools that could scratch the glass or potentially affect the frame or seal.

Payment is handled according to whatever we discussed at the estimate, usually due upon completion. We accept various payment methods and will provide a detailed receipt.

Finally, we’ll give you our contact information for any follow-up questions. If you notice anything concerning in the days after installation or have questions about your new glass, don’t hesitate to reach out.
